Mercury for Non-Resident US LLC Owners: The Engine Room (2026)
Mercury from abroad: $0 to open, free USD wires, an IO card that builds US business credit, and the patterns that get accounts closed.

Mercury is where a foreign-owned US LLC lives day to day. Money arrives, gets documented, and leaves with a purpose. Run it right and it quietly builds the history that unlocks the real US financial system later.
The numbers that matter
- USD international wires out are free on the standard option, or $15 flat with intermediary fees guaranteed covered.
- The IO card pays 1.5% back and, quietly the best part, reports to Experian, Equifax and Dun & Bradstreet. Business credit builds itself while you buy software.
- Mercury Personal comes free while the business account is active, normally $240 a year. A working US personal account as a side effect.
- One virtual card per vendor, each with its own cap. The hosting provider gets a $250 monthly card and physically cannot surprise you.
The fine print that bites
- Foreign currency is the trap. Non-USD wires cost 1% and non-USD swipes 3%, which eats the cashback and then some. Euros belong in Airwallex.
- Expect a proof-of-operations request eventually. Mercury asks for evidence of real US activity: customers, vendors, contracts. Deadlines are generous, but have invoices ready.
- Don’t run high-volume payouts to dozens of foreign individuals. That exact pattern has triggered closures. Contractor payouts belong on a payroll platform.
- Don’t let wealth sit here. Checking pays nothing. Surplus moves to Schwab, IBKR or Xapo the same week it lands.
Remember what Mercury is: excellent fintech, not a chartered bank. It’s the engine room, not the vault, and the layer above it, real US banking nobody can switch off with an automated email, is what the Blueprint builds.

Quick answers
Can a non-resident open a Mercury account?
Yes, with a properly formed US LLC and EIN. It costs nothing, opens in days, and its IO card starts building the business credit history that the chartered-bank tier reads later.
Why did Mercury close accounts like mine?
The pattern that recurs: high-volume payouts to many foreign individuals, merchant-like personal flows, or no evidence of real US activity when asked. Keep invoices ready, keep payouts on payroll rails, and keep the account doing its one job.
