Charles Schwab International from Paraguay: No SSN (2026)
How to open Schwab One International from Paraguay: passport, proof of address, W-8BEN, no SSN or ITIN, and ATM fees refunded worldwide.
| The one job | ATM cash worldwide with fees refunded, receiving salary, USD savings, US stocks |
| Cost of entry | $0, keep around $5k parked to stay clear of the refund abuse clause |
| Setup | 15 to 20 minutes online, approval in 3 days to 2 weeks. Open it after your cédula and RUC exist, with Paraguayan details only |
| Never use it for | Daily spending, business income, online checkouts |
The account is called Schwab One International, and it is a different product from the domestic Schwab that wants an SSN. This one is built for non-US residents, Paraguayan citizens and tax residents included.
Why you wait for the cédula
Here is the part most guides get backwards: do not open this from your origin country. Accounts inherit the residency they’re born under. Opened from your old country, the file carries your old address, your old tax number, and your old country’s reporting relationships. Opened with Paraguayan details, the account belongs to your Paraguayan tax residency from day one, and your country of origin never appears in its paperwork. Same account, completely different paper trail. The two to three weeks of patience is the privacy.
Getting in, the Paraguay way
Three documents, all of them Paraguayan. The cédula. A proof of residence showing your name, address and a date, and the Atlas or Familiar statement fits perfectly. And a W-8BEN, the standard tax form for foreigners, which takes your local tax number, so the cédula or RUC does the job. No SSN, no ITIN, no US paperwork, and nothing from the old country.
The ATM math
Most machines in Asunción dispense ₲1,500,000 to ₲2,000,000 per pull and charge $5 or more for the privilege. Pull as often as you need: the fees come back monthly and conversion runs at the Visa rate with no Schwab markup. On a normal expat cash habit the refund alone is worth hundreds a year. For heavy cash days, Ueno machines dispense ₲8,000,000 to ₲10,000,000 in one go.
The brokerage angle
Officially this is a brokerage with a checking layer, which changes two things: insurance is SIPC rather than FDIC (cash covered to $250,000), and the brokerage side opens US Treasury auctions directly, currently yielding around 5%, which most non-residents cannot touch any other way.
The fine print that bites
- The card is a fossil. No tap, no Google or Apple Pay, and no 3D Secure, so international online checkouts fail more than they succeed. It is the cash card, not the daily card.
- Strictly personal money. A stream of incoming payments from different people reads as merchant activity, and merchant-looking Schwab accounts get closed. Business income belongs in Mercury.
- The W-8BEN expires every three years. Let it lapse and Schwab automatically withholds 30% on taxable distributions. Set the calendar reminder on day one.
- Set a travel notice before every trip, or the fraud engine kills the card mid-journey.

Quick answers
Does Schwab International accept Paraguay residents?
Yes. Schwab One International is built for non-US residents, and Paraguayan tax residents qualify. Open it with the cédula, a local proof of residence, and a W-8BEN carrying your cédula or RUC, so the account is born under your Paraguayan residency, not your origin country’s.
Is Schwab the right daily spending card in Paraguay?
No. The card has no tap, no mobile wallets and no 3D Secure. Its jobs are ATM cash with refunded fees, receiving salary, USD savings and US stocks. Daily spending belongs on a different card in the stack.
