Airwallex for Foreign-Owned US LLCs: Passing the Substance Ask (2026)

Airwallex gives a US LLC local receiving details in 20+ currencies at 0.5% FX. The catch is the substance ask, and why week-one LLCs stall.

Airwallex solves the euro problem properly for a US LLC: local receiving details in 20+ currencies, so European clients pay you like a local, and conversion runs near 0.5%. Better rates than Wise, and designed for companies from the ground up. Then comes the part that catches foreign-owned LLCs.

The substance ask

Compliance often follows up asking you to demonstrate US presence, and the menu looks like this: a filed US federal tax return, a statement from a brick-and-mortar US bank, contracts with established US businesses, evidence of US employees, or a service lease such as a coworking agreement. Two or three from that list and you pass. None of them and the application stalls. Week-one LLCs stall at the substance ask, which is why Airwallex is an account you earn, not one you start with.

The document list

For a US company: Certificate of Formation or Articles of Organization, the EIN letter, IDs for everyone at 25%+ ownership, and a proof of business address dated within three months (a utility bill, bank statement or lease all qualify).

The Wise comparison, since everyone asks

Wise under the LLC can also receive international wires, and the same substance logic applies there. But Wise is an EMI: no banking license, no deposit insurance, and freezes with essentially no recourse happen often enough to matter. Keep Wise as a conversion utility if you like it. The multi-currency treasury belongs on Airwallex.

Notice the ordering lesson: the substance menu is mostly things the rest of the stack generates. Months of Mercury statements, real contracts, eventually the brick-and-mortar bank relationship. Sequence first, apply once.

Quick answers

Why did Airwallex stall my LLC application?

Almost always the substance ask: they want two or three proofs of real US presence (tax return, brick-and-mortar bank statement, US contracts, employees, or a service lease). A week-old LLC has none of them yet. Build the paper first, then apply.

Airwallex or Wise for a US LLC?

Airwallex for the treasury: licensed, multi-currency, ~0.5% FX, built for companies. Wise stays a conversion utility at most, because as an EMI it carries no deposit insurance and freezes offer little recourse.
